Three days. Over 590 kilometres. 23 helmets. Nearly 100 reflective jackets. One mission — Ride Safe.
Ride Safe Uganda recently took its road safety campaign beyond Kampala with a three-day motorcycle journey to Lira City, combining the adventure and brotherhood of touring with a practical mission: encouraging safer motorcycle riding on Uganda’s roads.
The campaign brought together Ride Safe Uganda riders on different motorcycles and connected with the Lira Bikers Club, whose members welcomed the team and provided valuable local guidance during the road safety activities in Lira.
More Than Just a Motorcycle Trip
For us, this was never simply about riding from Kampala to Lira and back.
Every kilometre presented an opportunity to demonstrate what Ride Safe Uganda stands for — responsible riding, proper protective gear, rider visibility, discipline and respect for every road user.
The journey covered more than 590 kilometres, giving the participating riders an opportunity to experience different roads, towns, traffic conditions and communities while carrying the same message throughout the trip:
Enjoy the ride. Respect the road. Protect the rider.
Taking Road Safety Directly to Boda Boda Riders
The main community activation took place in Lira Town, where Ride Safe Uganda, with guidance from the Lira Bikers Club, engaged boda boda riders on motorcycle safety.
Rather than stopping at awareness messages, we wanted the campaign to create a practical impact.
During the activation, 23 motorcycle helmets were distributed to boda boda riders, encouraging greater use of one of the most important pieces of protective equipment available to a motorcyclist.
The campaign also distributed nearly 100 reflective jackets to riders.
For boda boda riders who spend many hours navigating busy roads, visibility is critical. Reflective clothing makes a rider easier for motorists and other road users to notice, particularly in poor visibility and changing light conditions.
Our message was simple:
Protect your head. Make yourself visible. Ride responsibly.
Riding With the Lira Bikers Club
One of the highlights of the journey was the reception and support from the Lira Bikers Club.
Motorcycle safety becomes stronger when riders themselves become ambassadors for responsible road use. Connecting touring riders, local motorcycle clubs and boda boda riders creates an opportunity for road safety conversations to happen rider-to-rider.
It also demonstrated something important to us: Uganda’s motorcycle community can use its growing influence to create positive change on our roads.
The Machines Behind the Journey
The Ride Safe Uganda group represented a diverse collection of motorcycles built for different riding styles, from sport and sport-touring machines to adventure motorcycles.
The bikes included:
- Suzuki GT S1000
- Honda NC750 × 2
- Honda CRF Africa Twin
- Honda CBR 600RR
- Kawasaki Ninja SX 1000 × 2
- BMW KT1200
Despite the differences in machines, the principle remained the same — the motorcycle may change, but safety remains every rider’s responsibility.
The Journey Was Part of the Experience
The adventure itself was unforgettable.
The riders incorporated a shortcut using the ferry via Masindi Port on the journey, adding another memorable experience to the tour.
After spending three days on the campaign, the team returned to Kampala through Soroti, Tilini, Jinja and Kayunga.
From highways and busy trading centres to long-distance stretches and the ferry crossing, the journey demonstrated the realities of motorcycle touring in Uganda.
It also reinforced why preparation, protective equipment, visibility, group discipline and responsible riding matter on every journey.

Riding Can Be Fun — and Responsible
Ride Safe Uganda believes motorcycle safety should not remove the adventure, excitement or brotherhood that makes riding special.
It should protect it.
We enjoyed the machines. We enjoyed the roads. We enjoyed meeting fellow riders. We experienced the different towns along the journey and shared moments that remind us why we love motorcycles.
But the most important achievement was returning home safely while leaving something meaningful behind.
The Ride Safe movement is about building a culture where wearing a helmet is normal, protective gear is valued, visibility matters and experienced riders help influence the next rider to make safer decisions.
The Journey Continues
Lira was one destination, but the mission is bigger than one city.
We want to continue taking the Ride Safe message across Uganda, working with motorcycle clubs, boda boda communities, road users and partners who believe that every rider deserves the opportunity to return home safely.
Every helmet worn matters.
Every reflective jacket matters.
Every responsible decision matters.
And every rider who chooses safety becomes part of the movement.
